I kept this one is as close to the original demo as I could possibly get it. This was another case of the first thing I played being surprisingly good, so I kept it. This is sort of a cross between Paul Gilbert and Nothing But Thieves, but for some reason those harmonics from Machine Head’s Davidian snuck into the rhythm part and refused to leave.
Production-wise this is all the Soldano-SLO 100 plugin. Honestly, if you want a general guitar plugin for recording rock music, either the SLO-100 or the Plini cover nearly everything you could possibly need. I’ve started using the standalone SLO-100 plugin for monitoring while recoding and don’t use Logic’s software monitoring unless I absolutely have to, for minimum latency. The drums are a fairly heavily edited performance from the Logic Drummer, imported into EZdrummer 3 with EzMix 3 adding some production value.
There are a couple of interesting bits of technique in this one. The fast run which leads into the solo section is actually four notes per string descending the E and B strings, which is easier to alternate pick than trying to play it as a three note per string pattern, although the stretch is pretty tough on the left hand. There’s also a lot of Sustainiac from the JEM, set to harmonic mode in many cases to get that lovely note changing effect that’s honestly very hard to distinguish from real feedback. Ibanez should seriously think about offering a Sustainiac option in the production JEM; Steve uses sustainers himself so much these days that it’s pretty hard to get his modern sound without one.
