I think I must have been listening to Ommadawn a lot when I wrote this. The process was very quick; I improvised the melody in one-and-a-half takes and after that the arrangement also came together quite naturally. It’s nice when a piece of music decides on how it’s going to sound without me having to think about it too hard.
One of the great things about modern DAW music production is that, if I get really attached to a scratch guitar track, it’s now possible to clean it up into something usable. I think the clean melody was played on a Steinberger Spirit GT-Pro headless guitar which is honestly surprisingly good for what it is, but is still a $350 guitar with pretty uninspiring pickups.
This track is also the debut of my upgraded RG7620 which has now had the stock “custom Dimarzio” pickups replaced with a Blaze in the neck and a Evolution 7 in the bridge, which is again a bit more lively and suited to leads. The RG7620 plays the distorted lead and then, through the magic of recording technology, morphs into the JEM because I decided I needed some extra overtones courtesy of the Sustainiac in Harmonic mode. The last note of the lead part is actually played on my Solar S1.6 because that has active pickups and so doesn’t suffer from noise creeping in as notes fade.
